Pho is a Vietnamese soup which consists of broth, noodles, herbs and meat. It's a very popular food in Vietnam, also it is considered Vietnam's national dish.

So today I am going to tell you about the recipe for pho and I know that after reading the steps given below you will wonder how easy and convenient it is to make pho at home. I am sure that after following the steps given below this recipe will give you tasty pho just like the market.

Ingredients used to make Pho:-

  1. 2 medium onions
  2. 4-inch piece ginger
  3. 5-6 pounds of beef soup bones
  4. 5-star anise
  5. 6 whole cloves
  6. 3-inch cinnamon stick
  7. 1 pound piece of beef chuck, rump, brisket or cross rib roast, cut into 2-by-4-inch pieces
  8. 1  1/2 tablespoons salt
  9. 4 tablespoons fish sauce
  10. 1 ounce (1-inch chunk) yellow rock sugar


    1. Take a big pot, and then add beef bones to it. Fill it with cold water.
    1. Place the pot on the gas stove set the flame on high heat and boil it. Boil it at least for 3 to 5 minutes.
    1. This heating process is done so that all impurities and foam (or scum) can be released and come to the top.
    1. Drain the water from the pot wash bones with warm water and scrub them to remove residue if left.
    1. Take another pot add the bones back and cover with 6 quarts of cold water.
    1. Take a frying pan add some oil, onions and halved ginger onto the pan then cook them for 5 to 7 minutes, till the colour of the onion changes to golden brown.
    1. Now add cinnamon sticks, coriander seeds, fennel seeds, star anise, cloves and the black cardamom pod to the pan and cook on low flame.
          1. Bring parboiled bones and water to a boil on a low flame. Add charred onion and ginger as well as the other spices.
          1. Now add one and a half tablespoons of salt, a 1/4 cup of fish sauce and the rock sugar.
          1. Continue to cook broth, for 3 hours.
          1. With the help of tongs or a spoon remove bones, onion and ginger from the broth then strain the broth through a fine mesh strainer.
          1. The broth will have a layer of fat on its top, to remove it you can also pour the broth into a container and then refrigerate it overnight. As the broth cools, the fat will solidify, then it is very easy to remove.
          1. Then cook broth a little on low heat.
          1. Take noodles with hot water in a bowl and keep it aside for 15 to 20 minutes till it gets soft.
          1. Place noodles into boiling water and cook for about 10 seconds or until they collapse.
          1. Arrange all the slices of raw meat in a bowl, and then add hot broth. Over broth add onion slices and cilantro. Serve bowls as pho is ready to eat
